The picture below at the left is a 187 x 232 segment of a 1024 x 768 image, taken with three times optical zoom and two-and-a-half times digital zoom.
The picture below at the right is a 173 x 223 segment of a 1600 x 1200 image, taken with three times optical zoom.
Both pictures are in PNG format, so that there is no loss from further JPG compression. As you can see, the digital zoom gives you a larger picture, but without much improvement in resolution.
